How To Snag a Free Parking Pass at CSUN's University Student Union

Let's be real, paying for parking on campus is a HUGE pain. Between tuition, books, & just, you know, surviving, the last thing you want to do is shell out a few hundred bucks just for the "privilege" of parking your car to go to class. It’s a universal student struggle, & at a commuter school like Cal State Northridge (CSUN), it hits especially hard.
But what if I told you there’s a way to get a free parking pass? No, seriously. It’s not a myth or a legend passed down by seniors. Turns out, the University Student Union (USU) at CSUN has a pretty awesome program designed to help students out.
Here’s the thing, it’s not a free-for-all, & you have to be on top of your game to get one. But it’s ABSOLUTELY possible. I've dug through the official announcements & student chatter to get you the inside scoop.

The Magic Words: Transportation Assistance Program (TAP)

The key to this whole operation is the Transportation Assistance Program, or TAP. This is a program run by the USU's Board of Directors, which is made up of fellow students. They totally get the struggle. In fact, the program was started because they recognized that transportation is a basic need & a huge financial burden for many Matadors.
So, what is it exactly? A few times a year, typically for the fall & spring semesters, the USU gives away a limited number of free parking passes to students who demonstrate financial need. We’re talking about 340 free passes for the semester – which is a pretty big deal!
The whole idea is to ease the financial strain so students can focus on what's important: getting that degree. As the USU Board of Directors Chair, Daniel López, put it, they hope the program provides "a sense of relief, but determination to continue working toward their degree.” It's a student-led initiative for students, which is pretty cool.

Are You Eligible? Here’s the Checklist

Okay, so who gets to apply for these golden tickets? The eligibility requirements are actually pretty straightforward & inclusive.
Here’s what you generally need:
  • Be a CSUN Student: This one's a no-brainer. You have to be enrolled.
  • Minimum Units: You must be enrolled in at least 3 units for the semester you're applying for.
  • All Majors Welcome: Doesn't matter if you're in art, business, or engineering.
  • Undergrad & Grad Students: Both are welcome to apply.
  • Inclusive of All Students: The program is explicitly open to undocumented, DACA, & international students.
The main thing they're looking for is financial need. You'll have to explain why you can't use your current funds or financial aid to buy a pass.

The Application Game: How to Win

This is where you need to pay attention, because these passes are in HIGH demand. Last year, they received over 1,000 applications in the first 48 hours. The application window is short & it closes after the first 500 students apply, so you have to be ready.

When to Apply

The application period is VERY specific. For example, for the Fall 2025 semester, applications opened on July 29th at 10 P.M. For the Spring 2025 semester, it was December 4th at 10 P.M. It's always a specific date & time, usually announced on the USU's social media (their Instagram is a good place to watch) & the CSUN Newsroom.
My advice? Mark your calendar. Set an alarm. Do whatever you need to do to be online the second that application goes live.

Tips for a Killer Application

When you apply, you’ll be asked to explain your financial situation in 600 characters or less. That’s not a lot of space, so you need to make it count.
Here are some pro-tips gathered from past application cycles:
  • Be Clear & Concise: Get straight to the point. Don't fluff it up.
  • Explain Your "Why": Clearly identify why your current funds & financial aid aren't enough to cover a parking pass. Are you working to support your family? Did you have unexpected medical bills? Did your work hours get cut?
  • Highlight Extenuating Circumstances: If you've had any unforeseen emergencies or situations that have impacted your finances, this is the place to mention it. This helps them understand the urgency of your need.
  • Write it Beforehand: Don't try to type out your explanation on the fly. Write it out in a notes app or a document first, get it under 600 characters, & then just copy & paste it into the application form. This will save you precious seconds.

What Happens if You're Selected?

If you're one of the lucky students chosen, you'll get an email notification. From there, you'll have a specific window of time to go to the Parking Office in person to claim your pass.
You'll need to bring a photo ID & your vehicle's license plate number. This is super important – if you don't claim it in person during the specified dates, you could lose it.

The Reality: What if You Don't Get a Pass?

Honestly, with only a few hundred passes available & thousands of students applying, the odds are tough. It's awesome that the USU provides this, but the demand is just WAY higher than the supply.
So, what are your other options if you don't snag a free pass?
Of course, you can always buy a standard student permit through the myNorthridge Portal. Daily permits are also an option, but at over $10 a day, that adds up FAST. Parking is enforced 24/7 on campus, so just winging it isn't a great idea unless you enjoy expensive parking tickets.
This is where you might need to think outside the box a little. Campus parking isn't the only game in town.
Have you ever noticed all those houses with empty driveways surrounding the campus? Well, that's where a service like Prked comes in. Here's the thing, Prked connects people who need parking with homeowners who have extra space. So, you can find a convenient & often more affordable spot to park in someone's driveway or garage, just a short walk from campus.
It’s a pretty clever solution to the campus parking nightmare. Instead of circling the massive B5 parking structure looking for a spot, you could have a guaranteed space waiting for you. It’s definitely something to look into if you're tired of the official campus parking shuffle or if the cost of a regular permit is just too much to swallow. It gives you another, often more flexible, option.

The Big Picture on CSUN Parking

Parking is a huge part of the student experience at CSUN, & it's often a stressful one. The USU's Transportation Assistance Program is a fantastic initiative that provides some much-needed relief for hundreds of students each semester. It’s a testament to students advocating for other students.
But it’s also a competitive program, so it pays to be prepared. Know the dates, write a strong application, & be ready to hit "submit" the second it opens.
& if it doesn't work out, don't get too discouraged. Explore all your options, from carpooling to public transport to alternative parking solutions like Prked. Your education is the prize, & figuring out the logistics is just one of the hurdles.
Hope this was helpful & gives you a real shot at cutting down one of your biggest college expenses. Let me know what you think, & good luck with the application
