On-Campus Must-Dos (That Aren't Just for Students)

First things first, let's talk about what's right at your fingertips on the Colgate campus. It's a stunning place, & some of its best features are open for everyone to enjoy.

Picker Art Gallery

If you have any appreciation for the arts, you've got to check out the Picker Art Gallery. They have frequently changing displays & special exhibitions, so there’s always something new to see. It’s a great way to spend a couple of hours soaking in some culture.

Seven Oaks Golf Course

Golf enthusiasts, rejoice! The Seven Oaks golf course, designed by the legendary Robert Trent Jones, is consistently ranked as one of the best college golf courses in the country. It’s known for its challenging layout, with strategic water hazards & large greens. Even if you’re not a seasoned pro, it’s a beautiful course to play a round on.

Take a Stroll Through Campus

Honestly, one of the best things to do at Colgate is simply walk around. The campus is known for its impressive architecture & well-maintained green spaces. It's a great way to get a feel for the university's history & vibrant atmosphere.

Exploring the Charm of Hamilton Village

Just a stone's throw from campus, the village of Hamilton is a destination in its own right. The Hamilton Village Historic District was even listed on the National Register of Historic Places back in 1984.

The Village Green

The heart of Hamilton is undoubtedly the Village Green. This is where you'll find the local farmer's market on Saturday mornings from May to October, a MUST-DO for fresh produce & local goods. It’s also a lovely spot for a picnic or just to relax & people-watch.

Colgate Bookstore

This isn't your average college bookstore. The Colgate Bookstore is a beloved local landmark & a haven for book lovers. Its cozy ambiance & extensive collection make it the perfect place to get lost in for a while.

Hamilton Theater

A true centerpiece of the community since 1895, the Hamilton Theater shows a mix of films, hosts live performances, & community events. It's one of those classic, independent theaters that are becoming increasingly rare, so be sure to catch a show if you can.

Arts At The Palace

This community arts organization hosts a variety of cultural events throughout the year, from concerts to theater productions. It's another great way to tap into the local arts scene.

Let's Talk Food & Drink: Fueling Your Adventures

For a small town, Hamilton has a surprisingly diverse & delicious food scene. Here’s a rundown of some of my favorite spots:

For Your Coffee Fix

  • Fojo Beans: If you're serious about your coffee, this is the place to go. They're a small-batch artisan coffee roaster, & you can taste the quality.
  • Saxby's: With a motto of "making life better 'one cup at a time'," Saxby's is a great place to start your day.

Breakfast & Casual Bites

  • Flour & Salt Bakery: Get ready to wait in line, but I promise it's worth it. This spot, started by a Colgate grad, is famous for its bagels & baked goods, all made from scratch. They also have a cafe with bagel sandwiches & more.
  • Hamilton Eatery: A local favorite for deli sandwiches, salads, & burgers. It’s a great spot for a casual lunch.
  • New York Pizzeria (Slices): Every college town needs a great pizza place, & Slices is it. It's been ranked as one of the top pizza places in the U.S. by Zagat – pretty impressive for a small-town joint!
  • Rusch's Bar & Grill: A classic sports bar with great wings.

A Step Up: Dinner & Drinks

  • The Colgate Inn: A historic gem in the heart of Hamilton, the Colgate Inn offers both a main dining room & a fantastic tavern. The tavern is a popular spot for both locals & visitors, & the food is top-notch.
  • Seven Oaks Clubhouse: Don't let the golf course location fool you, the restaurant here is worth a visit on its own. They're known for their Parmesan Crusted Chicken, & the setting is both casual & beautiful.
  • Good Nature Farm Brewery: If you're a fan of craft beer, this is a must-visit. They use local ingredients in their brews & have a farm-to-table kitchen with a spacious beer garden.

  • Friends and Pho: Craving Vietnamese food? This spot on Lebanon Street has you covered.
  • Royal India Grill: For delicious Indian cuisine, check out this restaurant on Broad Street.

Getting Outside: Adventures in the Great Outdoors

One of the BEST things about the Hamilton area is its natural beauty. Whether you’re a seasoned hiker or just looking for a scenic walk, there's an outdoor adventure waiting for you.

Hiking & Walking Trails

  • Chenango Canal Towpath: This historic trail offers a lovely walk along the old canal. It's a great way to experience the area's history & natural scenery.
  • Shaver's Creek: Another popular spot for a beautiful hike through lush forests.
  • Hooks Wiltse Field: This area has four ball fields, including the one used by the Colgate University Softball team.

On the Water

  • Chenango River: A great spot for fishing, or just a peaceful walk along its banks.
  • Lebanon Reservoir: At the Lebanon Reservoir Campground, you can enjoy hiking, camping, canoeing, fishing, & boating.

Seasonal Fun

The outdoor activities in this area change with the seasons. In the summer, you can enjoy kayaking, biking, & swimming. Fall brings vibrant foliage that's perfect for hiking. And in the winter, you can go cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, or even snowmobiling.
And if you're visiting for an event, or just need a place to stash your car for a few hours or the day, finding a convenient parking spot can be a hassle. That’s where Prked comes in. It’s a pretty cool service that lets you rent a private driveway or garage from a local homeowner. It’s often cheaper & more convenient than public parking, especially during big events.

Day Trippin': Exploring the Wider Region

Hamilton's central location in Upstate New York makes it a fantastic base for exploring some of the region's other gems. Here are a few day trip ideas:

Cooperstown

Just a short drive away, Cooperstown is a must-visit for any baseball fan. It's home to the National Baseball Hall of Fame & Museum. But even if you're not into baseball, Cooperstown has a lot to offer, including the Farmers' Museum & the Fenimore Art Museum.

A Place for Your Things: A Quick Note on Storage

For students or anyone in the process of moving to or from the Hamilton area, finding a place for your stuff can be a real headache. Self-storage units can be expensive & inconveniently located. Here's a little life hack for you: Prked isn't just for parking. You can also use it to find affordable & convenient storage space in someone's garage, attic, basement, or even a closet. It's a great way to find a secure spot for your belongings without breaking the bank.
