Honestly, choosing a dorm is one of the most exciting & a little bit stressful parts of starting college. Your dorm is your home base, your social hub, & your late-night study spot all rolled into one. It’s where you’ll make some of your first friends & memories.
I’ve been around the UF block & have seen my fair share of dorm rooms, from the super social to the blissfully quiet. There’s a TON of info out there, & it can be overwhelming to sort through it all. That’s why I’ve put together this unofficial, insider guide to help you navigate the world of UF housing. We'll break down the different dorm styles, the top-ranked halls, & help you find the perfect fit for your vibe.
It's Not Just a Room, It's a Lifestyle: Understanding UF Dorm Styles

It's a bit off-campus, but it boasts some of the newest & nicest facilities. The apartment-style rooms are a huge draw, & the environment is perfect for students who want to be surrounded by creativity & big ideas.
The Social Butterfly's Dream Team: Broward & Jennings
If you’re coming to UF to meet as many people as possible & have that quintessential "freshman experience," look no further than Broward & Jennings. These traditional-style dorms are known for their vibrant social scenes. They are always buzzing with activity, & the doors are always open. They are also in a fantastic location, central to dining halls, libraries, & classes. A heads-up about Broward: it can get chilly, so pack some warm clothes!
Lakeside Complex: The Peaceful Retreat
If you prefer a quieter, more relaxed living environment, the Lakeside Complex is an excellent choice. As the name suggests, it's located by a lake, offering a serene & scenic setting. The rooms are spacious, & many are suite-style, giving you more privacy. While it's a bit further from the main campus, there's reliable transportation to get you where you need to go. It's a great option for students who want to escape the hustle & bustle at the end of the day.
Don't Overlook These Gems: Other Notable Dorms
While the dorms above get a lot of attention, there are plenty of other great options at UF. Here are a few more to consider:
Weaver Hall: This international dorm is known for being well-maintained & having a diverse & vibrant community. Its central location is another big plus.
Beaty Towers: These apartment-style dorms are a popular choice, especially for students in the Innovation Academy. You get your own kitchenette, which is a game-changer!
Murphree Area (including Murphree, Buckman, Fletcher, & Sledd Halls): This historic part of campus has a ton of charm. The location is fantastic, close to Midtown, the stadium, & plenty of classes. The room layouts can be a bit quirky, which adds to the character.

I've mentioned LLCs a few times, & they're worth a closer look. LLCs are residential communities that are centered around a specific academic or special interest. For example, there are LLCs for engineering, pre-health, & even one for out-of-state students in Broward Hall. Living in an LLC is an amazing way to connect with students who share your passions & get access to special programs & resources. If you're interested in a particular field of study, I HIGHLY recommend checking to see if there's an LLC for you.
The Great Debate: On-Campus vs. Off-Campus
While about 80% of freshmen live in the dorms, some students opt to live off-campus. There are a number of private dorms & student apartments near UF. Living off-campus can offer more space & amenities, like your own kitchen & a bigger room. However, you might miss out on some of the built-in community of the on-campus dorms. It really comes down to what you prioritize: convenience & a built-in social scene, or more space & independence.
A Quick Note on Parking & Storage
Let's be real for a second: parking on campus is a challenge. If you're bringing a car, be prepared to hunt for a spot. And dorm rooms aren't exactly known for their palatial size. If you find yourself with a car you can't find a spot for or a room overflowing with stuff, you might want to look into some alternative solutions.
